Victoria is back in London and she finds her homecoming becoming a tad messy as vampires walk the daytime hours, feeding at large, a meddling mother determined to get her married again and her duties as the Illa Gardella. Add in a determined corrupt cop and Victoria’s torn heart between Sebastian and Max, well this time around….Victoria is about to face the hardest task of her life. Will she be able to fight Lilith again and end the reign the vampires have on daytime?
WHEN TWILIGHT BURNS is the fourth book in Ms. Gleason’s Gardella Vampire Chronicles and it is one of her best to date. More romance and personal introspection then all action, Victoria is now trying to pick up the pieces after Rome’s fatal encounter and as she fights both inside herself and at forces beyond her control, she finds herself on a precipice: Is she turning into a vampire or will she beat the odds and stays mortal? Ms. Gleason does a phenomenal job keeping the tension thick and the reader guessing, especially as Victoria is torn between former slayer, Max and lover Sebastian. Both men are delightful and opposites yet both make Victoria weak in the knees and utterly off-balanced. I love the way this author keeps the characters growing in each book and delivers some hidden depths between the three main characters, especially as secrets come out and the queen of all vampires is back in London….determined to have Max back in her thrall and Victoria destroyed.
I was utterly absorbed by WHEN TWILIGHT BURNS and didn’t know who to root for: Max or Sebastian since both give Victoria what she needs or thinks she needs but in the end, Ms. Gleason surprises you with a choice that may keep you wondering if it is just a hint to what is to come. The writing is tight, fast paced and definitely more centered on the romance aspect rather than action-adventure as the other books were. I highly recommend this entire series if you enjoy a fast paced, character driven series that has a complex heroine who finds that sometimes her heart just doesn’t know where to go. I highly recommend this entire series but a word of warning- I highly suggest reading them in order since each book capitalizes on the last one. I look forward to seeing what Ms. Gleason has in the works in the future.
