The Bastion Club’s leader, Dalziel must face his past and future as he is called home due to the death of his father, the Duke of Wolverstone. Royce Varisey has been estranged from his family for sixteen years and must take up the reins of the dukedom.
I have not read this entire series as there are seven previous books so I was pleasantly surprised to find myself swept up into Royce’s story. Although there was some intrigue (finding the last traitor), it centered on Royce and his search for his duchess. There is no mystery about whom he chooses for his duchess as this is a “romance” novel and what fun would it be if he went the route of the “arranged” marriages that the aristocracy enjoyed. I was definitely pulled into this story from the first few pages and it was an extremely enjoyable ride.
Royce is definitely an alpha male: powerful, decisive and at times, brooding. It was entertaining watching him deal with his family members and the Grande Dames of the ton. Minerva is a perfect match for him. This is one intelligent, loyal and at times, stubborn woman. She is not afraid of him as she has nursed a love for him all these years. Minerva is not an ingénue of eighteen but a woman who knows her mind. It is the coupling of Minerva and Royce that makes this story so riveting. Their characterization and how they interact caused this reader to stay glued to the pages. It is so nice to read a love story featuring mature adults. Stephanie Laurens has penned a lovely story that brings this series to an end.
