Colette Duvoisin has passed away and her husband, Frederic has married his mistress Agatha who has an agenda of her own. She despises his children and is set on becoming the power behind the Duvoisin family. Charmaine Ryan is the younger children’s nanny. Frederick’s illegitimate son, Paul has taken a fancy to her and she is attracted to him. When John, the legitimate son returns home, things get out of hand as old rivalries arise between Colette’s two stepsons. Charmaine sees John as an obnoxious, rude man while the children adore him. John thinks that Charmaine is at first a conniving person but realizes that she really does love the children and cares for them. These two slowly get to know each other. Secrets come out and tragedy hits as the family struggles to hold dear to what is theirs. Charmaine is in the middle of all this and has to decide who she can trust.
Although I hadn’t read the first book in this saga, I picked up on the characters and plot pretty quickly. I did feel I missed out on some of the brewing relationships and how everything had reached the point in this book. However, this was an entertaining read that captured me from the first page. I found the children delightful. Each one was different and their interaction between each other and the other adults was a joy to read. I had the feeling that until now, Paul was always seen in a very good light, but in this story, the reader begins to doubt him. On the other hand, John seems to be the rogue, but I certainly harbored more sympathy for him and had hoped that he could reconcile himself with his father and step-brother. Maybe there is hope of this in the next book, which I would certainly like to read to find out. I can recommend this book as an interesting and entertaining read.
