Lainey Byrne leads a very busy life which she is in full control of. She has a hectic job, a boyfriend who is a chef and works all hours, a family full of dramas and she feels she’s got it all juggling nicely. But the balls all threaten to fall down when her aunt May dies. She’s left her B&B to the family, but it is in Ireland and the only way they can get it and hopefully sell it is when one of the family goes to Ireland and runs it for a year. And Lainey has been chosen. She decides to ‘dump’ her boyfriend thinking that a long distance relationship doesn’t stand a chance. He is heartbroken. When she arrives in Ireland, she finds the B&B guest-free and run down. There is a lot of work to be done, but aunt May has provided the funds to get things going. Lainey now needs to learn to cook, clean and run a small hotel. She has friends who help, and a handsome childhood friend who could cause distractions. But Lainey is about to find out that fate will lead her into a direction she never thought of.
This is a story that will make your mouth curl up, your toes curl up and will warm your heart. I really liked this story very much. Lainey is a wonderful character that you can’t help but cheer for. This clever author gives a lot of insight into family life, sibling rivalry, betrayals and secrets. This is a book that is easy to read as it flows along wonderfully. The writing is tight, the dialogue snappy. Ms McInerney masterfully writes how life is in Australia as an Irish immigrant and about life in rural Ireland. As a visitor to Ireland myself, I enjoyed the scenes and dialogue. The characters leap off the pages as they interact with each other throughout the story. Here we also meet Eva and Joseph again from Upside Down, Inside Out. I must say, I enjoyed this story much more. You will especially feel for Lainey and her boyfriend who is so far away. I had to read the ending twice, it was so beautiful. I got the goosebumps and felt all warm and safe inside. Yes, Monica McInerney is an author that I will be watching and hopefully will be reading more from in the near future.
