Annalise Marony has decided to become a Handmaiden of the Order of Solace. Her mother raised her in the faith, but she hasn’t practiced it for a long time. Her reasons for becoming a Handmaiden are not altogether selfless. She wants to get out of a betrothal and if she can play the part of a dedicated novitiate long enough, then her engagement will be annulled. But, Cassian, an ex-priest seems to be misleading her at every turn. It is his job to test the girls on their faith. One day, Annalise will have to pleasure a patron in the ways of the flesh, but for the moment she takes pleasure in teasing Cassian. They both play a dangerous game as they could be parted, or bound forever.

This is quite a good story. It’s not exciting in that the plot keeps you turning the pages, but it is interesting to see how Annalise and Cassian meet, develop and grow. Of course, Annalise has some things to learn, even though she is a great character. She’s strong, independent, clever and kind. Cassian is rather dark and secretive and it was very entertaining to see Annalise catch him off guard. The sexual tension builds up slowly which make the scenes with Annalise and Cassian fun to read. The one bit of conflict is Annalise’s betrothed who is not at all keen on annulling the betrothal and this causes Annalise a bit of bother. On the whole, this was a pleasant read and I would like to read more of this world and its people.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
