Valentine Smith hates the holiday that shares her name, but this year she has to go out because of a job. She’s supposed to die eating a chocolate heart, but ends up being fought over by an angel with a self-imposed quota to meet, and a dead sexy demon.

Ms. Cheever has a truly wicked imagination and a penchant for utterly delicious demons, and this story ticks both those boxes. The reader is right there with Valentine drooling over Don’s delightful physical attributes, as well as alternately laughing and gasping as the plot unfolds and the battle rolls across the universe.

At only 60 pages the book isn’t long enough for a great deal of world building, but there’s enough to appreciate what is happening where, and to join in the action and the antics of the characters. Both main characters are well developed and engaging, and even the secondary characters are sufficiently fleshed out to more than carry their part of the plot. Since this is the second book in the “Holidays are Hell” series, I anticipate the world building and minor characters are gradually being built up over the series as well.

There was one minor POV wobble when we were in Valentine’s POV and she used a term she didn’t yet know, but overall the book was very clean and easy to read.

This is a fun, fast-paced story, a little different, but very much in Ms. Cheever’s enjoyable style, and well worth reading. I hadn’t read the first book in this series and followed the story just fine without it, but if it’s as good as this one it’d be worth picking it up as well and reading them in order.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
