Laurell K. Hamilton’s gift to summer reading, AFFLICTION, is the latest of vampire hunter Anita Blake’s supernatural hunts; this time for the cure to a zombie disease.

Micah, one of Anita’s two live-in lovers and were-leopard, has kept away from his family for more than a decade to keep them safe from his former leopard pard leader.  Now that Micah’s father is dying from a strange rotting disease, Micah, Anita, Nathaniel and a few select bodyguards go to Micah’s hometown to get to the bottom of the zombie disease.  But Micah’s father is running out of time.

If you think that after more than twenty books into a fan-favorite series, author Laurell K. Hamilton would run out of ways to keep the stories fresh, feral and firey, you would be very wrong.  Anita is back doing what only she can, trying to balance between her work as a necromancer and Marshall and her private life filled with vampires, were-animals, lovers and friends.  Even when Anita isn’t working a case, she just can’t help but look into a little supernatural weirdness.

AFFLICTION is emotional and speeds along as Anita tries to find a way to save Micah’s dad.  The sense of time running out never stops.  The characters in this story are many of this reader’s favorites such as Jean-Claude, Micah, Nathaniel, and good ole boy Ted Forrester.  Each main character has been well thought out and is capable of carrying their own stories (and have).  The politics, the sex, the mystery and the tension all come together to give readers yet another wonderful summer read by the pool.  As I will no doubt re-read this book at least once more, Laurell K. Hamilton’s AFFLICTION easily rates four stars.
