Getting to know Author Jack Greene/Win an e-book

Please give a warm welcome to author Jack Greene, who sat down with me to answer a few of my pesky questions.

To get us started can you tell us a little about what you are working on or have coming out?

I'm working on a number of full length novels, and I'm pretty focused on sci-fi right now. I've got the next parts to the Conflict stories I'm working on, as well as a post-apocalyptic novel (one of my favorite settings). Coming out next, though, on September 17th, 2013, is Love Imitates Art, something I wrote on the Eurostar from Paris to London and very much inspired by those two cities.

Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?

It varies, but I usually write a short story a month… obviously the longer ones take more time! If I'm really inspired, though (and real life allows!) I can really write fast.

What is your writing routine once you start a book?

I don't have a routine, really. I write when I have time. I write the best when I'm on an airplane for some reason!

Among your own books, have you a favorite?  A favorite Character that you enjoy writing or reading about?

I got really involved with my first full-length, novel, Indiscretion. The character of Leif really got under my skin, and I found myself thinking about him even after the book was finished.

Which of your books has been the easiest to write?  The hardest?  The most fun?

Indiscretion  probably takes all of those categories. At times it was easy, at times, so sad it was hard to make myself write it. But all in all I had a great time with it.

Which comes first, the story, the characters or the setting?

Setting, usually. Well, more or less a situation or storyline. Then the characters sort of sneak in as I think about it.

What part of a book has been the easiest to write?  The hardest?

Beginnings are quite easy for me. Endings are the hardest. The sex is of course the easiest to write ;)

What are the elements of a great romance for you?

Obstacles in the way of love, I suppose… the fact that love really does conquer all.

What is the hardest/the easiest part of writing for you?

The hardest is finishing a story. I have a folder full of unfinished stories to prove that. The easiest is beginning a new one!

Are you in control of your characters or do they control you?

A little of both. Usually my guys do what I tell them to do, but occasionally they rewrite themselves—Leif in Indiscretion is the perfect example of that.

What are some of your favorite things or hobbies to do?

I love working out, the beach, seeing bands play live, and traveling.

If you could go anywhere in the world to write, where would it be and why?

Paris inspires me. So did Istanbul. Really, anywhere out of the ordinary.

If you could collaborate with one author who would it be?

Oh… that's a hard one. Stephen King, I think. Or Neil Gaiman.

What books are currently on your nightstand or e-reader that you are itching to read?

It's not out yet, but I'm waiting breathlessly for Richard K. Morgan's The Dark Defiles, the next book in the Steel Remains/Cold Commands series. And not just because the protagonist is a gay man! Also, the sequel to The Shining.

Anything you would like to add?

Great interview, thanks for sharing! I agree about Leif. He is one of those characters that will not leave you indifferent. I love him to pieces! Since I have read the book, no need to enter me. Good luck with your WIP and keep that keyboard hot :-)

Oh! I do love a good sci-fi novel! Can't wait to get my hands on Conflict. I am curious as to what the post apocalyptic novel is gunna be about! I am excited for that one as well. I am curious as to what made you decide to become an author because it seems like it would be quite stressful. Well keep those creative juices flowing!
