The Earl of Kendall, Captain Garret Sinclair has had enough of war and death. As one of the only survivors of the charge of the Light Brigade, he has tried to forget by drinking and wenching as much as possible but he can’t outrun the memories he has of that awful day. But Garret finds that he has made enemies, dangerous ones and they will stop at nothing to see him dead.

Lady Alexandra Langdon is on her last few pounds, desperate, she concocts a plan to dress up as a guy and try to win at the gaming tables. But when she inadvertently lets slip a plot to kill the Earl of Kendall, Alexandra finds her life has changed as she joins forces with Garret to flush out his enemies and deal with them. But neither anticipate that hearts will become involved and as Alexandra tries to resist Garret’s charms, she worries her secrets will be revealed even as they race to find the killers. Can these two find a way to bridge their differences and let their hearts lead them to a love worth fighting for?

FOR THE LOVE OF A SOLDIER is one of those charming tales that hit all my reading buttons. Dashing heroes. Intriguing heroine. Mystery. Romance. What more can you ask for in a book? This was the debut book by Ms. Morgan and it definitely captured my interest. Her weaving the Crimean War and the charge of the Light Brigade as  the backdrop for her hero’s past was quite intriguing and had me racing to the intent to learn more about this actual event. The mix of romance along with mystery was expertly done and you could tell the author did some extensive researching for her story as they were sprinkled within the story just so and the reader wasn’t felt like there was massive information dumping going on. The writing was very well done with a cast of characters that fairly leapt from the pages and into my living room. I have to admit, it was Garret and Alexandra that completely captivated me. These two main characters were quite well written and I loved their dynamics with one another as well as with the secondary characters. The secondary characters kept the story moving along at a nice pace and were just as enjoyable as Garret and Alexandra were.

FOR THE LOVE OF A SOLDIER is a charming debut for Ms. Morgan and one I couldn’t put down. With the stroke of her pen, she weaves a story that captivates the reader and leaves them breathless in the end. There was humor, passion, mystery and more all rolled up in the pages that had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. If you are looking for a historical book that is just a bit different, then try FOR THE LOVE OF A SOLDIER and settle in for some wonderful reading pleasures.
