TWO-1/2 HEARTS

Sheriff Cab Johnson has a secret.  He’s in love with Rose Bellingham—but honor and friendship keeps him from stepping up to tell Rose just how he feels.  Rose is engaged to one of his buds, Jason Thayer.  But several years before Jason moved from town—supposedly to make some extra money before marrying Rose.

And Rose has her own secret. Actually, she has several including just how unhappy she is.

Fila is on the run.  She’s been promised to a man who has left Afghanistan for the United States.  The Taliban plans to have her wed a planted terrorist to give him a taste of the virgins that await him once he becomes a martyr.

One by one the players—Cab, Rose, Fila and Jason come to terms with their secrets and desires.  Will they sacrifice their personal happiness for someone else?  Or will true love show them the way?  And can true love find its way before the worst possible nightmare happens in a small western town?

Cora Seton had a pretty good premise for her book, SHERIFF CATCHES A BRIDE.  Somewhere along the way the story took off in directions that had me shaking my head wondering what the author was thinking.

First, Fila’s story was compelling.  Her escape from her guards and determination to find the family with a connection to the woman that helped her village in Afghanistan was heartfelt.  Her story could have—and I felt should have—stood on its own.  There was so much depth to her escape, her hopes and dreams I looked for to each section she appeared in.

While the shifts to Rose and Cab’s story were made at plausible points, I wasn’t really all that interested in what happened with them.  I wanted to keep following Fila’s story.

For the most part I just didn’t connect with Rose.  After her initial intuitive hunch – which the author seemed to forget about after the first few chapters, I lost interest in her.  When she started building her tree house the author pretty much lost me, at least as far as Rose’s story.

SHERIFF CATCHES A BRIDE is the 5th book in Seton’s Cowboys of Chance Creek series.  While there were references to the earlier books I didn’t feel that I needed to have read them to know who the characters were and how they were tied together.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
