Jeannie Gordon goes for a swim with one guard. She needs to be careful as she was kidnapped before. Fighting and intrigue between the clans causes her to try to dampen her headstrong ways. She doesn’t expect a man to appear before her and not recognizing him at first, she shoots him. Duncan Campbell has returned to clear his name of a crime he did not commit. He never expected to be shot by the woman he had loved and left when she betrayed him. Duncan desperately needs her help as she holds the information he needs, but Jeannie is torn between her loyalty to her family and the love that is re-blossoming between her and Duncan. But someone doesn’t want Duncan’s innocence to be proven and it will take Jeannie and Duncan together to find out who framed him all those years ago.

This was an interesting story that I enjoyed. It was a light, quick read and I believe lovers of historical romances will like this, too. I enjoyed these two characters and their interactions. The sexual tension was palpable and I was eagerly waiting their coming together. There are a lot of secondary characters that give the story depth and the historical elements are well done. Monica McCarty pulls her readers into a time gone by. I did have a bit of a hard time with Jeannie. I felt her conflict not really believable. There were some misunderstandings between her and Duncan and I felt this author held out clearing it all up to keep up the conflict. This book could have been a bit shorter and much tighter as many issues where repeated. Still, it is a good story and worth the read.
