When actress Susannah Cate’s husband is sent to prison, she struggles to feed and care for Neve her early teens daughter. She takes on a variety of part-time jobs, with help from her Aunt Lola. Nothing ever seems to go right, no matter how hard she tries. When her best friend and Neve’s god-mother, Patsy takes a job in Australia she feels even more depressed. When Patsy is offered a job in Paris, they are all relieved and life looks better.
Neve is worried about her mum, and confesses to Patsy that she’s found and written to her mum’s first love, Alan Cunningham. Patsy encourages her, remembering how hot he used to be when they were young. After Susannah meets him again, it seems as if life is wonderful again and they soon move in together. When Susannah is offered a fantastic acting job on a new soap opera, life seems good, especially when Patsy finds herself wooed by an amorous Frenchman. When Alan becomes jealous because she’s away during the week filming, their love begins to fade and Neve begins acting very strangely as horror comes into her life.
OUT OF THE SHADOWS is an extremely interesting tale, with a blend of passion, intrigue and mystery as secrets and betrayal unfolds. This reviewer kept turning the pages as the horror behind closed doors escalated and the atmosphere became filled with angst and drama. It’s a multi-faceted tale with very interesting characters and a well drawn plot, which is often lacking in many books. The main characters are mostly likeable and fit seamlessly into the unfolding story as it progresses. The scene changes all fit easily into the main tale, as the reader is taken to London, Paris, Monte Carlo and the dales of Derbyshire. The background scenes are vividly displayed allowing the reader to almost see and smell the places as the characters lives are lived.
Ms. Lewis is an excellent writer, one who weaves a spell around the reader, so you are almost compelled to keep turning the pages. It’s also a timely reminder of what can lie beneath the surface of those we choose to love, and how secrets and lies can destroy. The covering comment of, ‘what would you sacrifice for love?’ is an apt statement for this book.
