King Toridesh’s first wife cuckolded him, so ever since then he’s made quite sure none of his successive brides get the opportunity to do likewise. He has them murdered right after the wedding night. Of course, this makes the citizens of his country rather wary of letting him catch sight of their womenfolk. Actually, his policy hasn’t been great for the country’s economy either.  He thinks Issalia is going to be just another one-night wife. She however, is determined to last a fraction longer. If she can.

This book starts off as many fairy tales do with the beautiful virgin poor girl catching the eye of the wicked king.

But Issalia has brains as well as beauty and also the ability to make friends as well as soothe the savage king.

Ms. DeWinters has also built an interesting world, one where her fantasy is set not in a European-style setting of knights and castles, but in a more science fiction style world. Not one filled with technological gadgetry, but with sand and heat and oasis gardens like a medieval new world middle east minus the fighting perhaps. This is most definitely intriguing, and, like her plot, a new twist to a tried and true recipe.
Issalia is a good mix of sweet, and innocent yet smart and determined. The perfect match for King Toridesh’s cruel and careless shell covering a hurt and aching soul.
A good read. Different and engaging.
